Many of the world\u2019s hardest-to-decarbonize industries face a\u00a0similar challenge: how to obtain the white-hot heat their operations need \u2014 without using fossil fuels.<\/p><\/div>

Redoxblox<\/a>, a\u00a0San Diego-based startup that landed $31<\/span>\u00a0million in venture investment on Wednesday, says it has found a\u00a0clever way to achieve this task: using the power of chemical reactions to store energy at\u00a01<\/span>,500<\/span>\u00a0degrees Celsius for hours at a\u00a0time.<\/p><\/div>

That\u2019s one way to describe the electrochemical storage breakthrough that Redoxblox has been working on commercializing for the past four years. At its heart is a\u00a0proprietary metal oxide developed by company co-founder James Klausner that\u2019s capable of undergoing a\u00a0reversible redox cycle \u2014 a\u00a0chemical reaction that can discharge a\u00a0blast of energy.<\/p><\/div>

The firm is still in the early stages compared with some of its thermal storage competitors, but aims to eventually help industries from food processing to chemical and cement production clean up their heating.<\/p><\/div>

Industry accounts for roughly\u00a030<\/span>\u00a0percent of global carbon emissions, said\u00a0CEO<\/span>\u00a0Pasquale Romano \u2014 and most of those emissions come from fossil-fueled high-heat processes. The industrial sector\u00a0remains well behind<\/a>\u00a0in its effort to decarbonize as rapidly as is needed to combat climate change.<\/p><\/div>

Ever-cheaper renewable energy \u2014 the main tool for decarbonizing sectors like electricity, transportation, and building heating \u2014 is making thermal energy storage solutions like Redoxblox\u2019s\u00a0more economically viable<\/a>\u00a0as replacements for fossil-fueled industrial heating. But these technologies still have to prove themselves capable of doing the\u00a0job.<\/p><\/div>

The science behind Redoxblox\u2019s\u00a0\u201c<\/span>booster storage\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>

Redox, or reduction-oxidation, reactions are the driving force behind energy storage technologies such as\u00a0redox flow batteries<\/a>. But unlike other redox-based batteries \u2014 and standard lithium-ion batteries \u2014 Redoxblox\u2019s systems don\u2019t store electrical energy in electrochemical bonds.<\/p><\/div>

Neither do Redoxblox systems store heat only, as is the approach of its thermal storage competitors like\u00a0Antora Energy<\/a>,\u00a0Brenmiller Energy<\/a>,\u00a0Calectra<\/a>,\u00a0Rondo Energy<\/a>, and others that have received\u00a0hundreds of millions of dollars of investment<\/a>\u00a0over the past decade or\u00a0so.<\/p><\/div>

Instead, Redoxblox passes electricity through its storage material, contained inside steel pressure vessels, Romano said.\u00a0\u201c<\/span>The current passing through the storage material heats it up, because the storage material is effectively a\u00a0resistor,\u201d he said \u2014 that is, it heats up much like the coils on an electric stove\u00a0do.<\/p><\/div>

Some heat batteries use resistive heating materials like these, while others use materials like rocks and bricks to absorb heat delivered via separate resistive heating elements. In both cases, heat is what\u2019s being stored, rather than electricity.<\/p><\/div>

Redoxblox\u2019s process differs by using a\u00a0redox reaction to squeeze more heat out of its thermal storage system than would be possible otherwise. Romano called it a\u00a0\u201c<\/span>booster\u201d for energy storage.<\/p><\/div>

When the startup\u2019s proprietary metal oxide reaches temperatures between\u00a01<\/span>,000<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a01<\/span>,500<\/span>\u00a0degrees Celsius,\u00a0\u201c<\/span>the redox reaction starts,\u201d Romano said. That reaction involves the chemical separation of oxygen within the metal oxides,\u00a0\u201c<\/span>and when that oxygen breaks off, the chemical process is endothermic \u2014 it\u2019s absorbing heat that\u2019s caused by the electrical current,\u201d he\u00a0said.<\/p><\/div>

In essence, that high-temperature chemical reaction increases the energy stored within the system above and beyond the heat that\u2019s contained within the storage medium, which in Redoxblox\u2019s case is its proprietary metal\u00a0oxide.<\/p><\/div>

But dispatching that additional energy requires reversing the redox cycle. To do so, Redoxblox blows air through the storage material. The oxygen in that air is\u00a0\u201c<\/span>causing the redox reaction to go in the opposite direction,\u201d Romano said \u2014 and that reaction is exothermic, or heat releasing. That provides an extra energy boost to what would otherwise be an unadulterated transfer of heat from the storage medium to the air blowing through it.<\/p><\/div>

\u201c<\/span>It\u2019s holding up the temperature higher than if you were blowing air across it and using the heat only,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u201c<\/span>That means in an industrial application that needs super-hot air, we spend a\u00a0lot more time hanging out in the\u00a01<\/span>,500<\/span>\u00a0to\u00a01<\/span>,200<\/span>\u00a0[degrees Celsius] zone before you have to charge it up\u00a0again.\u201d<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>
